Here are some typical vegetable farm situations and possible solutions with ball park prices using the two vendors we have found to be the least expensive and most practical for farms at this time.  Note, prices do not include shipping and handling or paid consulting that may be needed to survey your site, prepare recommendations or test a proposed configuration in the field.

These solutions may not work on your farm without adding WiFi extenders, repeaters or the devices to overcome distance and interference.

Although Monnit solutions are easy to order online and install yourself they are more limited than Mojyle solutions in ability to work in the more difficult situations involving distance and interference that are often encountered on farms. Mojyle also takes advantage of the availability of WiFi on the farm and provides a greater selection of sensor types and radio frequencies.

Small Farm- Short Radio Range

Remote Locations

For locations away from your Internet router or outside of your WiFi coverage cellular based gateways may be used.

Monnit sells one for $230 plus $15/month for a month to month contract, or $180 plus $10/month with a 2 year contract.  This would upload sensors surrounding it or using repeaters to link to it.

Mojyle's iMonkits ($120 to $200) can accept a 3G cellular modem (about $30 to $60) as well as multiple gateways such as Monnit USB and 1-Wire sensors.  Cellular connectivity is $12/month.  Mojyle states "For distributed deployment model, Mojyle offers the ability to interconnect multiple kits using Xbee links. This enables an iMonkit-Cluster. Only one of the iMonkit from the cluster need to have Cellular, Wi-Fi or Ethernet uplinks. This saves recurring costs for any combination of distributed deployment spread over a few miles (depending on the Xbee modules ranges).."  See the Vendors/Consultants, Mojyle section for further information.
